The author studies when an uncountable Tikhonov space contains a small realcompact subspace. In particular, she answers Arkhangel'skij's question affirmatively by proving the following results: Theorem 1. Every uncountable compact space has a realcompact subspace of cardinality \(\omega_1\). For general Tikhonov spaces which are not necessarily compact, the following results are also obtained: Theorem 2. If there are no \(S\)-spaces, then every uncountable Tikhonov space has a realcompact subspace of cardinality \(\omega_1\). \textit{S. Todorčević} has constructed [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 280, 703-720 (1983; 532.03023)] a model of set theory in which there are no \(S\)-spaces. Theorem 3. Under assuming the set-theoretic principle \(\diamond\), there exists an uncountable Tikhonov space with no realcompact subspace of cardinality \(\omega_1\).
