Let \(M\) be a compact group with normalized Haar measure on \(M\) and let \(\{G_k\}_{k=0}^\infty\) be an increasing sequence of subgroups of \(M\) such that \(\bigcup_{k=0}^\infty G_k\) is dense in \(M\). A sequence \(\{V_k\}_{k=0}^\infty\) of finite dimensional subspaces of \(L^2(M)\) is a multiresolution of \(L^2(M)\) with respect to \(\{G_k\}_{k=0}^\infty\) if \(V_k\subseteq V_{k+1}\) and \(\dim V_k=|G_k|\) for all \(k\), \(\bigcup_{k=0}^\infty V_k\) is dense in \(L^2(M)\), and there exists \(\phi_k\in V_k\) such that the set \(\{L(g)\phi_k:g\in G_k\}\) is a basis for \(V_k\), where \(L:M\to U(L^2(M))\) is defined by \((L(g)f)(x)=f(g^{-1}x)\) for \(f\in L^2(M)\), \(g,x\in M\), and \(U(L^2(M))\) denotes the group of unitary operators on \(L^2(M)\). This is a generalization of the multiresolution of \(L^2([0,2\pi])\) introduced by \textit{S. Mallat} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 315, 69-87 (1989; Zbl 0686.42018)]. The authors characterize various axioms of multiresolution, prove the existence and construct a wavelet basis for \(L^2(M)\). They construct a stationary multiresolution and wavelets from cyclic vectors. The infinite dihedral group serves as an example of a non-abelian group for which there exists a multiresolution.
