A Banach space \(X\) is an \(R(1)\) space if finite codimensional subspaces \(Y\) are proximinal when every hyperplane in \(X\) containing \(Y\) is proximinal. This notion was considered by the second author in [J. Approximation Theory 49, No. 2, 130-143 (1987; Zbl 0621.41024)], where he obtained nontrivial examples of \(R(1)\) spaces through some smoothness conditions of the dual space \(X^*\). It is easy to see that \(c_0\) is an \(R(1)\) space although its dual \(\ell ^1\) is far from smooth. The aim of the present paper is to prove that every (closed) subspace of \(c_0\) is an \(R(1)\) space. The proof relies on a strong form of subdifferentiability for norm attaining functionals. Some open problems are discussed.
