The conjugacy classes of fixed point free elements in \(\text{GL}_n(F)\) and \(\text{SL}_n(F)\) (Q1968762)

A matrix \(A\in\text{GL}_n(F)\) is said to be a fixed point free element of order \(m\) if there exists a positive integer \(m\) such that \(A^m=I\). In this paper the authors determine a formula for the conjugacy classes of fixed point free elements in \(\text{GL}_n(F)\) and \(\text{SL}_n(F)\) generalizing the work of \textit{R. H. Dye} [Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 72, 1-6 (1972; Zbl 0251.20046)].
