Let \(X\) be a complex Banach space. One can define the algebra \({\mathcal H}_{w^*}(X^*)\) of all the holomorphic functions on \(X^*\) that are weak-star continuous on the bounded subsets of \(X^*\). It is a Fréchet algebra with the topology of uniform convergence on bounded sets. Now \(X\) is naturally embedded in \({\mathcal H}_{w^*}(X^*)\). The main result of this paper is that the algebra generated by \(X\) is the algebra \({\mathcal P}_{fw^*}(X^*)\) of all the polynomials of finite type that are weak-star continuous on bounded subsets of \(X^*\). When \(X\) has the approximation property, a result of \textit{R. M. Aron}, \textit{B. J. Coole} and \textit{T. W. Gamelin} [Can. J. Math. 47, No. 4, 673-683 (1995; Zbl 0829.46034)] asserts that \({\mathcal P}_{fw^*}(X^*)\) is a dense subset of \({\mathcal H}_{w^*}(X^*)\). A consequence of the main result is that the continuous homomorphisms \({\mathcal H}_{w^*}(X^*)\to \mathbb{C}\) are the evaluation maps. Using this fact the authors characterize continuous endomorphisms of \({\mathcal H}_{w^*}(X^*)\) (they are given by \(f\mapsto f\circ g\) where \(g\) is holomorphic from \(X^*\) to \(X^*\) and weak-star continuous on bounded subsets of \(X^*\)) and convolution endomorphisms (obtained when \(g\) is a translation). Finally, assuming that \(X^*\) has the approximation property, they give similar results for the algebra \({\mathcal H}_{wu}(X)\) of entire functions on \(X\) that are weakly uniformly continuous on bounded sets in \(X\) (algebra which is known to be isomorphic to \({\mathcal H}_{w^*}(X^{**})\)).
