Many questions of the noncommutative geometry can be reformulated as questions about geometrically defined Connes's cycles. The aim of this paper is to introduce generalized cycles and to study the generalized chains and characters. The simplest example of generalized cycle is provided by the algebra of the forms with values in the endomorphisms of some vector bundle, together with a connection. Other examples arise from vector bundles equivariant with respect to the action of the discrete group or holonomy equivariant vector bundles on foliated manifolds. The author shows that the character of generalized cycles can be defined by the explicit formula in the \((b,B)\)-bicomplex, resembling the Jaffe-Lesniewski-Osterwalder formula for the Chern character. In the geometric examples above this leads to the formulas for Bott's Chern character in the cyclic cohomology. A formula for the character of a bounded finitely-summable pre-Fredholm module is obtained too.
