If \(K\) is a metric simplicial complex, then a \(K\)-approximation of a map \(f:X\to K\) is a map \(g:X\to K\) such that for each simplex \(\sigma\in K\) and each \(x\in X\), \(f(x)\in\sigma\) implies \(g(x)\in\sigma\). It is known that a paracompact space \(X\) can be characterized as having covering dimension less than or equal to \(n\) if and only if for each \(K\), every map \(f:X\to K\) has a \(K\)-approximation \(g:X\to K\) such that \(g(x)\subseteq K^{(n)}\). The author extends this idea to show that metric spaces can be characterized as having strong large transfinite dimension in terms of \(K\)-approximations (such metric spaces are equivalent to strongly countable-dimensional finitistic spaces).
