In the paper it is studied the weighted uniform approximation to continuous functions \(f\in C[0,+\infty)\) with weights of the form \(w(x)=(1+x)^{-\beta}\), \(\beta > 0\), by the use of Balász-Shepard operator \(S_n(X;f;x):= (\sum_{k=0}^{n}|x-x_k|^{-s}f(x_k))/( \sum_{k=0}^{n}|x-x_k|^{-s})\), \(s>2\). Here \(X=\{x_k\}_{k=0}^n\subset [0,+\infty)\) denotes a matrix of (distinct) nodes. For the case studied in the paper, the nodes are given by \(x_k=k^{\gamma}/n^{\gamma/2}\) for a certain \(\gamma \geq 1\). In order to give direct and converse results it is first necessary to introduce a good step function for the classical weighted moduli of smoothness. This step function is defined as \(\phi(x)=x^{1-1/\gamma}\) and the corresponding weighted moduli of smoothness is \(\omega^{\phi}(f,t)=\sup_{0\leq h\leq t}\|w\Delta_{h\phi}f\|\). One of the important remarks of the paper is the fact that the step function they need for the proofs strongly depends on the mesh. Another important remark is that the results they prove are not valid for weighted polynomial approximation. The paper is a continuation of previous work by the authors [East J. Approx. 4, No. 4, 435-458 (1998; Zbl 0932.41018)].
