This paper studies finite simple shearing and finite simple extension for an incompressible linear viscoelastic material. Two constitutive relations are used: (I) a linear relationship between the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the history of Green-Saint Venant's strain tensor; (II) a linear constitutive relation between the Cauchy stress tensor and the relative Green-Saint Venant's strain tensor. The authors show that the above constitutive relations for incompressible viscoelastic materials give identical response for infinitesimal simple shearing and infinitesimal simple extension. In the case of finite deformations, the constitutive equations (I) and (II) predict different responses. It is also established that in stress-relaxation tests, the slope of the stress isochrone is an increasing function of deformation measure for constitutive relation (I), but a non-increasing function of deformation measure for constitutive relation (II).
