The classical constructions of symbolic representation of hyperbolic toral automorphisms are based on their geometrical properties and make no significant use of algebra. In [Funct. anal. Appl. 26, No. 3, 170-173 (1992; Zbl 0810.58031)] \textit{A. M. Vershik} proposes an approach based on arithmetical ideas, leading to a symbolic representation of the Fibonacci automorphism on the 2-dimensional torus, in terms of the two-sided golden mean shift. A less canonical but much more general method is given in [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 18, No. 2, 357-372 (1998; Zbl 0915.58077)] by \textit{R. Kenyon} and \textit{A. Vershik}, giving rize to selfsimilar tilings, thanks to a detailed study of homoclinic points. In this paper is given an algebraic extension of the work of Kenyon and Vershik [loc. cit.]. Let \(A\) be an expansive automorphism of a compact connected abelian group \(X\) whose dual group is cyclic. Then there exists a canonical group homomorphism from the space of all bounded sequences of integers onto \(X\) that realize a commutation relation between \(A\) and the shift map. The restriction of this symbolic representation is almost one-to-one onto a sofic subshift, whose existence is proved on a nonconstructive way. If \(A\) is a hyperbolic toral automorphism with a Pisot eigenvalue, under certain conditions, the restriction of the symbolic representation to the two-sided beta-expansion is onto and almost 1-to-1.
