History of mathematics was a subject for the first international conferences of mathematics as well as of philosophy and history. Unfortunately, this did not last very long. History of mathematics also played a role in the ``Jahrbuch über die Fortschritte der Mathematik'' and in the ``Enzyklopädie der mathematischen Wissenschaften'', initiated by Felix Klein, published from 1898 onwards. The different volumes allow an impression of the different accesses applied by the authors. Klein's original idea of a volume ``mathematics as a part of the cultural life'' had to be abandoned. The historical view was also present in the French edition of the ``Encyklopädie'', for which Jules Molk was responsible. Molk was a collaborator of Paul Tannery. As a consequence several contributions were not merely translated but historically completed and actualized.
