Let \(T_n\) denote the \(n\)-th Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind and let \(\overline T_n(x): =T_n(\xi_nx)\), where \(\xi_n: =\cos (\pi/2n)\) is the largest zero of \(T_n\). The author shows that \[ \max_{[-1,1]} \bigl|\overline T_n^{(k)} (x)\bigr|\geq\max_{[-1,1]} \bigl|P_n^{(k)} (x)\bigr |\tag{1} \] for all \(k\geq 2\) and all polynomials \(P\) of degree \(\leq n\) (where \(n\geq 2)\) which vanish at \(\pm 1\) and satisfy the inequality \(|P(x) |\sqrt {1-\xi^2_nx^2}\) at the points \(\xi_n^{-1} \cos((2j-1) \pi/(2n-2))\) for \(j=1, \dots, n-1\), that is, \(\overline T_n\) has maximal uniform norm on \([-1,1]\) of the \(k\)-th derivative among all such polynomials. Moreover, equality in (1) is possible if and only if \(f= \pm \overline T_n\). For \(k=1\), the author remarks that (1) is true for \(2\leq n\leq 7\) and leaves as an open question whether (1) is satisfied for arbitrary degree \(n\geq 2\).
