The aim of the paper is to study the optimal design of non-uniform filter banks. In the proposed method, the initial finite impulse response (FIR) analysis filters are designed accordingly to the characteristics of the input, while the FIR synthesis filters are obtained on the basis of an \(H_2\)-norm of system error that is minimized over all synthesis filters having a prespecified order. Then, the synthesis filters obtained in the previous step are fixed, and the analysis filters are designed and found again similarly. At each iteration, the \(H_2\)-norm of the system error is decreased until its convergence to a final value. The coefficients of the analysis or synthesis filters are found, at each iteration of the design procedure, as the least squares solution of a system of linear equations. In order to be improved when necessary, the frequency characteristics of the obtained filters can be altered by adding penalty terms to the objective function.
