This is a part of the author's project to analyze the topological and homological properties of the Quillen complex \({\mathcal A}_p(G)\) of a finite group \(G\) at a prime \(p\) [\textit{D. Quillen}, Adv. Math. 28, No. 2, 101-128 (1978; Zbl 0388.55007)]. Let \(G=O_{p'}(G)\rtimes S\) where \(S\cong\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}*T\) is of symplectic type with \(T\) an extra-special \(p\)-group and \(O_{p'}(G)\) solvable. From results of Quillen [loc. cit.] it is easy to show that when \(p\) is odd, the Quillen complex of \(G\) at \(p\) is Cohen-Macaulay. In this note the author shows that the result also holds when \(p=2\). One of the main ingredients of the proof is a ``fiber type lemma'' due to the author [J. Algebra 178, No. 1, 239-263 (1995; Zbl 0857.20030)].
