A semigroup \(S\) is called a generalized inflation of its subsemigroup \(U\), if (i) \(S=\bigcup_{a\in U}S_a\), where the set \(S_a\) for each \(a\in U\) contains \(a\); (ii) there exists a mapping \(\Gamma\colon S\times S\to U\), \((x,y)\mapsto x_y\) such that \(a_y=a\) for all \(a\in U\) and \(y\in S\); (iii) if \(a,b\in U\), \(x\in S\) and \(y\in S_b\), then \(xy=x_by_a\). If \(x\in S_a\), where \(a\in U\), then \(|x|=x_a\). A generalized inflation of \(U\) is called an inflation of \(U\), if \(x_a=|x|\) for each \(x\in S\) and each \(a\in U\). Conditions for a generalized inflation to be an inflation are discussed. Further the paper studies varieties of generalized inflations of unions of groups and generalized inflations of rectangular groups. The last part brings some unanswered questions.
