Research on cosmic strings is of great significance today in theoretical physics. In the paper under review, the author has dealt with the problem of the existence of zero-energy fermion solutions on cosmic strings in the \(SO(10)\) grand unified theory (GUT). The fermion zero modes on an abelian cosmic string are treated in the second section while in the third section the details of the fate of zero modes on strings formed in \(SO (10)\) grand unified symmetry, are presented. In the fourth section, the index theorems and spectral flow are discussed. It is shown that the zero modes may be destroyed and the conductivity of the string altered. The cosmological implications of this are described, too. There are 20 references.
