Topology of real algebraic sets of dimension 4: Necessary conditions (Q1972332)

In an earlier paper [\textit{C. McCrory} and \textit{A. Parusiński}, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér., IV. Sér. 30, 527-552 (1997; Zbl 0913.14018)], the authors introduced the ring of algebraically constructible functions on a real algebraic set and the link operator on this ring. The description utilizes the integration against the Euler characteristic proposed by \textit{O. Ya. Viro} [in Topology and geometry, Rohlin Semin. 1984-1986, Lect. Notes Math. 1346, 127-138 (1988; Zbl 0686.14019)]. In the present paper the authors use operators on the ring of algebraically constructible functions to define local obstructions for a 4-dimensional semi-algebraic set to be homeomorphic to a real algebraic set. The authors produce a large number of independent local topological conditions (including the Akbulut-King conditions) satisfied by algebraic sets of dimension 4. It is not known whether a 4-dimensional semialgebraic set which verifies all these conditions should be homeomorphic to a real algebraic set.
