Let \(K\) be a number field with ring of integers \({\mathfrak O}\), and let \(\Gamma\) be a subgroup of finite index of the symplectic group \(Sp_{2n}({\mathfrak O})\). Assuming that the ring \({\mathfrak O}\) is Euclidean, the author characterizes a finite spanning set of the cohomology group \(H^N(\Gamma,\mathbb{Z})\), where \(N\) is the cohomological dimension of \(\Gamma\). According to the author, his algorithm for calculating the spanning set generalizes the modular symbol algorithm of \textit{A. Ash} and \textit{L. Rudolph} [Invent. Math. 55, 241-250 (1979; Zbl 0426.10023)].
