The paper deals with tilings of the plane by squares of three sizes. Such a tiling is called unilateral if no two congruent tilings have a common side, it is called equitransitive if for any two congruent tiles \(S\) and \(S'\) there is a congruence transformation of the plane which maps \(S\) onto \(S'\) in such a way that the whole tiling is mapped onto itself. The author classifies unilateral, equitransitive tilings of the plane by squares of three sizes and shows that the eight tilings described in earlier papers by D. Schattschneider (five tilings), Martini et al. (one tiling) and B. Grünbaum (two tilings) are the only ones possible. To obtain this result he uses the classification of the 46 fundamental planigons (a planigon is a polyhedron whose copies tile the plane without gap and overlap) by \textit{B. N. Delone}, \textit{N. P. Dolbilin} and \textit{M. I. Shtogrin} [Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 148, 111-141 (1980; Zbl 0473.52009)].
