For the review of the first edition from 1994 see Zbl 0815.62027. Like the first one, this second edition is aimed at upper division graduate students and practitioners who may already be familiar with the application of statistical procedures. While the wide applicability of permutation tests continues to be emphasized, their limitations are also revealed. For the new edition the text has been expanded by 40 pages \((30\%)\). This is due to smaller improvements all over the text, to expanded sections (3.4 Comparing dispersions, 4.2.3 Testing interactions in balanced designs, and 7.6 Multiple regression), and to the inclusion of new sections on sequential analysis and comparison of spatial distributions. The exercises at the end of every chapter have been supplemented with drills and a number of graduate-level thesis problems. The references are updated, too. But I want to give an additional hint to two relevant articles by \textit{J. Gebhard} and {N. Schmitz} [Stat. Pap. 39, No. 1, 75-85 and ibid. 87-96 (1998)], not included in the references.
