This paper mainly deals with the study of the fractal dimension of nonattracting chaotic sets and their stable and unstable manifolds. The authors present two examples, one a noninvertible, two-dimensional map with two expanding (positive) Lyapunov exponents, and the other, a chaotic scattering billiard in three spatial dimensions. The last one yields a new structure for its invariant manifold. This system (scattering billiard in 3D) also provides an example of a system which is not typical and illustrates how perturbation of the system restores applicability of the dimension formulae.
