This paper reconsiders the classical Lévêque solution of heat transfer induced by a small step chance in the surface temperature in a shear flow. To describe the shear flow, the laminar channel flow of a perfect gas at high Reynolds numbers is rescaled in triple deck variables. Then the author investigates the retroaction of temperature on the basic Poiseuille profile. This retroaction is achieved by two means, first through the dependence of viscosity and density upon the temperature, and second through the gravity-induced transverse pressure gradient gauged by the inverse of Froude number. The author shows that in the absence of transverse gradient a new self-similar solution can be obtained, and this solution indicates that the skin friction at the lower wall is reduced by the heating, while the skin friction at the top wall is simultaneously increased. The choice of Poiseuille flow instead of external flow was motivated by a practical application of this theory to metal oxide chemical vapour deposition reactors.
