Using a continuum material model, the author carries out a theoretical investigation of the effect of pre-stress on wave propagation in a fibre-reinforced plate. It is shown that in the case of extensional and flexural waves the high wavenumber phase speed limit of the fundamental mode of dispersion relation coincides with the surface wave speed. A brief discussion of stability and bifurcation related to the corresponding wave processes concludes the paper.
