The Mather's theorem [\textit{J. N. Mather}, Math. Z. 207, No. 2, 169--207 (1991; Zbl 0696.58027)] on the existence of minimal solutions for superlinear positive definite Lagrangian systems in one-dimensional case is proved in this paper without the condition of superlinearity. Then, by using the Legendre transformation, applications are given to the existence of Aubry-Mather sets which correspond to minimal solutions in Lagrangian approach. For this purpose, the author points out a useful way to produce symplectic coordinates in the plane.
