A smooth map \(f:M\to\mathbb{R}^k\) on a Riemannian manifold \(M\) is called isoparametric if \(f\) has a regular point, \(\langle\nabla f_\alpha,\nabla f_\beta\rangle\) and \(\nabla f_\alpha\) are functions of \(f\), and \([\nabla f_\alpha, \nabla f_\beta]\) is a linear combination of \(\nabla f_1,\dots, \nabla f_k\) with coefficients being functions of \(f\), \(\alpha,\beta= 1,\dots,k\). An isoparametric foliation on \(M\) is the decomposition of \(M\) into the leaves of an isoparametric function on \(M\). In the present paper, the author classifies all isoparametric foliations on the complex projective space \(\mathbb{C} P^n\) whose leaves are compact, irreducible and of codimension \(\geq 2\). He shows that every such foliation can be obtained in the following way: let \((X,A)\) be a pseudo-Hermitian symmetric space of rank \(k+1\), that is, \(X= G/K\) is a symmetric space and \(A\) is an element in the linear isotropy group \(K^*\) such that \(A^2=-I\) and \(\cos(t) I+\sin (t)A\in K^*\) for all \(t\in\mathbb{R}\). Any such space \(X\) is necessarily even-dimensional. Then the orbits of the isotropy representation of \(X=G/K\) are invariant under the natural \(S^1\)-action on the unit sphere in the corresponding tangent space and project to an isoparametric foliation on the induced complex projective space. The author derives also a list of all pseudo-Hermitian symmetric spaces.
