The Cauchy problem for the integro-differential equation in a separable Hilbert space \(H\) is considered. The studied problem is reduced to the first-order differential equation in the space \(\overline H\) that is the orthogonal sum of \(m+1\) copies of \(H\). The existence and uniqueness of the strong solution of the Cauchy problem is proved. Moreover, the spectral problem associated with the original problem is investigated. The presented theory is applied to solve the problem of small motions of the viscoelastic fluid. The obtained results are valid for the hydrodynamic problem.
