The author deals with the subgroup of the unit group of the ring of arithmetic functions (with Dirichlet convolution as multiplication), generated by the completely multiplicative functions. He shows that this subgroup is free abelian, exhibits a multiplicative function which does not belong to it and studies certain subgroups.
