After the famous discovery in the sixties by \textit{G. S. Gardner}, \textit{J. M. Green}, \textit{M. D. Kruska} and \textit{R. M. Miura} of the inverse spectral method for solving the Korteweg-de Vries equation for sufficiently rapid decreasing boundary conditions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 19, 1095-1098 (1967)], other nonlinear evolution equations were ``integrated'' with the same methods [see the monograph \textit{M. J. Ablowitz} and \textit{P. A. Clarkson}, Solitons, nonlinear evolution equations and inverse scattering, Cambridge Univ. Press, Cambridge (1991; Zbl 0762.35001)]. One of these equations is the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \(i\psi_t=- \psi_{xx}+2|\psi|^2 \psi\). The paper under review is devoted to the study of the periodic solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with applications to the computation of alternative symplectic structures as well as to some statistical mechanical properties. It is strongly based on previous results obtained by \textit{I. M. Krichever} [Funct. Anal. Appl. 22, No.~3, 200-213 (1988; Zbl 0688.35088)] and \textit{I. M. Krichever} and \textit{D. H. Phong} [J. Differ. Geom. 45, No.~2, 349-389 (1997; Zbl 0889.58044)].
