The author first gives a survey of the problem of describing \(n\)-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate systems and shows that the problems of describing \(n\)-orthogonal surfaces and of classifying Hamiltonians systems of hydrodynamic-type are almost equivalent. The core of both problems is to find all solutions to some overdetermined systems. It is important that the order of these systems can be reduced to one. Using the inverse scattering method (ISM) the author shows that the corresponding systems can be integrated. For this the author uses a version of ISM known as the dressing method developed by Shabat and the author.
