The author derives new criteria on the stability of the absolutely continuous spectrum of Schrödinger operators under perturbations by general classes of slowly decaying potentials. Further, to apply these criteria, in particular, to find new classes of slowly decaying potentials preserving the absolutely continuous spectrum of the free and periodic Schrödinger operators. The technique developed to prove the criteria includes a condition ensuring the a.e. convergence of certain linear integral operators. For any operator \(H_U\) \(\left(\equiv-{d^2\over dx^2}+ U(x)\right)\), with nonempty absolutely continuous spectrum, (subject to suitable assumption), the criteria give conditions that are sufficient for the absolutely continuous spectrum to be stable under perturbation by all potentials \((V(x))\) satisfying \[ |V(x)|\leq C(1+ x)^{-(3/4)- \varepsilon}\quad\text{and}\quad |V(x)|\leq C(1+ x)^{-(2/3)- \varepsilon}, \] respectively. The paper is supplemented with a very useful bibliography on the topic.
