Starting with the work of \textit{R. A. Blumenthal} and \textit{J. J. Hebda} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 33, 597-611 (1984; Zbl 0511.57021)] the author studies the Ehresmann connections for a foliated manifold and certain kinds of rectangles without terminal vertex. The author defines the notion of a non-extendable rectangle without terminal vertex for a foliated manifold \((M, {\mathcal F})\) and he investigates its existence. Theorem 1. For every \(r\geq 3\) and every \(n\geq r+1\), there is a triple \((M,{\mathcal F},D)\) of an \(n\)-dimensional manifold \(M\), a foliation \({\mathcal F}\) of codimension \(r\) on \(M\) and a complementary distribution \(D\) to \({\mathcal F}\) which admits a singular non-extendable rectangle without terminal vertext. The other purpose of this note is to study the case of a foliation on a Riemannian manifold. Let \(F^\perp\) be the orthogonal complementary distribution of a foliation \({\mathcal F}\) on a Riemannian manifold \((M,g)\). Theorem 2: If \((M,g)\) is a complete Riemannian manifold and \(\sup G^\perp_\alpha <\infty\) for every vertical curve \(\alpha\), then \(F^\perp\) is an Ehresmann connection. Here \(G^\perp_\alpha\) denotes a certain function.
