Let \(T\) be a linear operator of the weak types \((a,b)\) and \((p,q)\) with \(a<p\) and \(b<q\). This interesting paper is devoted to the study of the boundedness properties of \(T\) related to the Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem in some cases where the intermediate domain spaces is close to \(L^a\) or \(L^p\) in terms of the fundamental function, in the sense of the work of \textit{C. Bennett} and \textit{K. Rudnick} [Diss. Math. 175, 67 p. (1980; Zbl 0456.46028)]. If the underlying measure space is \((0,1)\) with the measure \(dt/t\), one of the significant results of the article under review states that \(T:{\mathbf A} \rightarrow {\mathbf B}\), a bounded operator with respect to the norms \(\|f\|_{\mathbf A}=\|tf^{**}(t)\|_{\mathbf X}\) and \(\|f\|_{\mathbf B}=\|\sup_{s<t}\rho(s)f^{**}(s)\|_{\mathbf X}\), where \(\rho(s)=s^{1/q}/\log(e/s)\) and \(X\) belongs to a wide class of rearrangement invariant spaces. This fact is a corollary of one of the main results: if \(T\) is of the weak type \((p,q)\) and also \(T:L^{p,\infty}\rightarrow L^{\rho,\infty}\) with \(p,q>1\) and \(p<\infty\), then \(T:{\mathbf A}\rightarrow {\mathbf B}\). It is also proved that \({\mathbf B}=\bigcup_T T({\mathbf A})\), i.e., \({\mathbf B}\) is optimal as a range space for these operators \(T\), and a complete study of the cases where the new space \({\mathbf B}\) coincides with the known one \({\mathbf G}\) such that \(\|f\|_{\mathbf G}=\|\rho(s)f^{**}(s)\|_{\mathbf X}\) is included. As an application, if \(T\) is of the weak types \((a,b)\) and \((p,q)\) on a finite measure space, then it follows that \(T:L^{p,r}(\mu)\rightarrow {\mathbf B} \subset L^{p,r}(\log L)^{-1}\) for any \(r>1\), with \[ \|f\|_{\mathbf B}=(\int_0^1 \sup_{s<t}[\rho(s)f^{**}(s)]^r dt/t)^{1/r}. \] Here the supremum replaces the function alone in the norm of the Lorentz--Zygmund space \(L^{p,r}(\log L)^{-1}\) formerly considered by Bennett and Rudnick, a space that is strictly larger than \({\mathbf B}\) if \(q\) and \( r\) are finite.
