A detailed presentation of algorithms related to the numerical estimation of tangent maps and state transition matrices for nearly Keplerian \(n\)-body systems formulated in the classical variational form is given and applied to various cases. The method is characterized by better accuracy (as the analytic differentiation replaces the numerical one for adjacent orbits), and by considerable computational savings.
