The authors carry on with their work on braided subfactors and modular invariants [\textit{J. Böckenhauer} and \textit{D. E. Evans}, Commun. Math. Phys. 197, No. 2, 361-386 (1998; Zbl 0924.46047); Commun. Math. Phys. 200, No. 1, 57-103 (1999; Zbl 1151.46316); Commun. Math. Phys. 205, No. 1, 183-228 (1999; Zbl 0949.46030); \textit{J. Böckenhauer}, \textit{D. E. Evans} and \textit{Y. Kawahigashi}, Commun. Math. Phys. 208, No. 2, 429-487 (1999; Zbl 0948.46048)]. Suppose that \(N\subset M\) is a finite index inclusion of type III factors, and that \(_N {\mathcal X}_N\) is a finite braided system of endomorphisms of \(N\). Using \(\alpha\)-induction, one associates to an element \(\lambda\) in \(_N {\mathcal X}_N\), two compatible endomorphisms \(\alpha_\lambda^+\) and \(\alpha_\lambda^-\) of \(M\). The finite matrix \(Z\) with entries given by \[ Z_{\lambda,\mu} =\langle \alpha_\lambda^+ ,\alpha_\mu^- \rangle , \qquad \lambda,\mu \in _N{\mathcal X}_N , \] defines a modular invariant, commuting with Rehren's statistics matrices \(S\) and \(T\) that define a unitary representation of \(\text{SL}(2;\mathbb Z)\) of a special kind. This paper contains a thorough study of the structure of chiral and antichiral systems \(_M {\mathcal X}^\pm _M =\{ \alpha_\lambda^\pm \}_{\lambda \in _N {\mathcal X}_N}\) and of their intersection, the ambichiral system \(_M {\mathcal X}_M^0\). Using a version of Ocneanu's double triangle algebra and detailed graphical computations, it is proved that non-degeneracy of the braiding on \(_N {\mathcal X}_N\) implies that the induced ambichiral braiding is non-degenerate. Besides, the dimensions of irreducible representations of the chiral fusion algebra are shown to be equal to the chiral branching coefficients, defined as dimensions of intertwiners between ambichiral and \(\alpha\)-induced sectors. Finally, the \(\text{SU}(2)\) modular invariants and the \(\text{SU}(3)\) modular invariants arising from the conformal inclusions \(\text{SU}(3)_3 \subset \text{SO}(8)_1\) and \(\text{SU}(3)_5 \subset \text{SU}(6)_1\) are realized from subfactors.
