For part I of this paper see \textit{C. R. Pradeep} and \textit{A. R. Shastri}, Osaka J. Math. 34, No. 2, 429-456 (1997; Zbl 0890.14021); part II: \textit{R. V. Gurjar, C. R. Pradeep} and \textit{A. R. Shastri}, ibid., No. 3, 725-743 (1997; Zbl 0890.14022). In this paper, the authors prove that any homology plane is rational, where a homology plane \(V\) by definition is a smooth (affine) algebraic surface over the complex numbers, such that \(\text{H}^i(V, {\mathbb Q})=0\) for all \(i>0\). This answers a question raised by M. Miyanishi.
