Collapse pressures for rhombic plates (Q1976944)

In earlier works of the author upper bound estimates for the collapse of clamped or simply-supported regular polygonal plates under uniform pressure had been derived for rigid-plastic materials that satisfy the square Johansen yield criterion. The present paper adopts a similar technique and desribes the collapse mechanism more precisely, in particular in the case of a rhombic plate with a small acute angle. The fan mechanism in each corner is augmented by a radial hinge line whose length, as well as the shape of the fan, is chosen to minimise the collapse pressure.
