The authors present the implementation of an active nonlinear vibration absorber. The control technique exploits the saturation phenomenon that occurs in quadratically-coupled multi-degree-of-freedom systems subjected to primary excitation and possessing a two-to-one internal resonance. The absorber is coupled with the structure through a sensor and an actuator, where the feedback and control signals are quadratic. First, the authors study the control of vibrations of a single-degree-of-freedom system. The equations governing the response of the closed-loop system and the method of multiple scales allow to obtain an approximate solution. Then the authors investigate the performance of control strategy by studying its steady-state and transient characteristics. An electronic circuit is designed to emulate the absorber, and the approach is extended to multi-degree-of-freedom systems. The results show a successful reduction of the response amplitude for the structures.
