Let \(d:E\to F\) be a homomorphism of vector bundles over some space \(M\). For each \(m\in M\), \(d\) restricts to a linear map \(d_m:E_m\to F_m\); we denote by \(L\) the union of the spaces \(\text{ker} d_m\). There is a projection map \(\pi:L\to M\), whose fibres are vector spaces, but in general this is not a bundle because the dimensions of the fibres vary. We have also a related projection \(\mathbb{P}(\pi)\) whose fibres are the associated projective spaces. In general the topology of \(\pi\) is complicated, but, if we restrict attention to holomorphic bundles over complex analytic spaces (or for that matter to algebraic bundles), there is more that can be said. In this paper the authors obtain some topological properties of \(\pi:L\to M\) in this situation. It is easy to see that there is a filtration of \(M\) by closed analytic subsets \(\{ X_i\}\), where \(X_i=\{m\in M:\dim \text{ker} d_m\geq i\}\) and that, on \(X_i-X_{i+1 }\), \(L\) restricts to a vector bundle of rank \(i\). The main theorem states that, in addition, each \(X_{i+1}\) has an open neighbourhood \(U_i\) in \(X_i\) for which there is a strong deformation retract \(U_i\to X_{i+1}\) which extends to \(L|_{U_i}\) such that the restriction to each fibre of \(L\) is a linear monomorphism. If \(k\) is the largest integer such that \(X=X_k\) (called here the minimal rank), it follows from the theorem and the Dold-Thom criterion [\textit{A. Dold} and \textit{R. Thom}, Ann. Math. 67, 239-281 (1958; Zbl 0091.37102)] that \(\mathbb{P}(\pi)\) is a quasifibration up to dimension \(2k-1\). These results are of interest because the situation described arises quite frequently in complex analytic (and algebraic) geometry. In particular, the authors give applications to the Abel-Jacobi map of a Riemann surface and to spaces of rational curves in symmetric products of Riemann surfaces.
