This paper discusses the Landweber iteration for solving the nonlinear ill-posed operator equation \(F(x)=y\). Here \(F:{\mathcal D}(F)\subset {\mathcal X}\to{\mathcal Y}\) is a continuous and Fréchet differentiable operator between the Hilbert space \({\mathcal X}\) and \({\mathcal Y}\). The right hand side \(y\) is given approximately by \(y^\delta\) and \(\|y^\delta -y\|\leq\delta\). This problem is ill-posed if its solution does not depend continuously on the right hand side \(y\). Suppose \(L\) is a densely defined unbounded self-adjoint strictly positive operator in \({\mathcal X}\). It is shown that the following iteration \[ x_{k+1}^\delta=x_k^\delta+L^{-2s}F'(x_j^\delta)^*(y^\delta-F(x_k^\delta)), \quad k=0,1 2, \ldots \] has a better convergence rate than the Landweber iteration for which \(L\) is the identity operator. Here \(x_0^\delta\) is an initial guess of the solution. Convergence analysis is discussed for finite dimensional approximations. Numerical results show consistence with the theoretical analysis.
