According to the ``brave new algebra'' program, the classical tools of homological algebra (such as spectral sequences) should still be available when abelian groups are replaced by spectra, rings by \(A_\infty\)-spectra, tensor products by smash products, and so on. The ``brave new algebra'' approach to Bökstedt's topological Hochschild homology is explained for example by \textit{Z. Fiedorowicz, T. Pirashvili, R. Schwaenzl, R. Vogt} and \textit{F. Waldhausen} [``MacLane homology and topological Hochschild homology'', Math. Ann. 303, No. 1, 149-164 (1995; Zbl 0846.55007)]. The purpose of the present paper is to use the spectrum homological algebra tools of \textit{A. D. Elmendorf, I. Kriz, M. A. Mandell} and \textit{J. P. May} [``Rings, modules, and algebras in stable homotopy theory. With an appendix by M. Cole'', Math. Surv. Monographs 47, Am. Math. Soc. (1997; Zbl 0894.55001)] to generate basic spectral sequences calculating the topological Hochschild homology of extensions. They generalize the spectral sequences constructed by \textit{T. Pirashvili} and \textit{F. Waldhausen} [``MacLane homology and topological Hochschild homology'', J. Pure Appl. Algebra 82, No. 1, 81-98 (1992; Zbl 0767.55010)] and \textit{T. Pirashvili} [``Spectral sequence for MacLane homology'', J. Algebra 170, No. 2, 422-428 (1994; Zbl 0811.18009)].
