      Estimate based on the Fourier transform are used for proving local existence and uniqueness of solutions \(u(t,x)\), \(v(t,x)\) to the Cauchy problem for the coupled hyperbolic system \(\partial ^2_t u - C_1 \Delta u = \partial _{\alpha } u \cdot v\), \(\partial ^2_t v - C_2 \Delta v = \partial _{\alpha } u\cdot v\) with initial data \(u(0,\cdot)\), \(v(0,\cdot)\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)\), \(\partial _t u(0,\cdot)\), \(\partial _t (v,\cdot)\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)\), where \(\partial _{\alpha }\) stands for \(\partial _t\) or \(\partial _{x_i}\), \(i=1,2,3\). The assumption \(C_2 > C_1\) plays a substantial role in the argument. Some extensions to other types of bilinear right-hand sides are briefly discussed.
