Blumberg's theorem says that for every function \(f:{\mathbb R}\to {\mathbb R}\) there exists a dense set \(W\subset \mathbb R\) such that the restriction of~\(f\) to~\(W\) is continuous. The authors compare some restriction properties (concerning continuity and pointwise discontinuity) of real-valued functions defined on separable metric spaces. Let \(X\) be an uncountable, separable metric space, \(\mathcal A\) a \(\sigma \)-algebra of subsets of \(X\), and \(\mathcal J\) a proper \hbox {\(\sigma \)-ideal} on~\(X\). Moreover, let \(\mathfrak L\) be a class of ``large'' subsets of~\(X\) (``largeness'' being associated with the \(\sigma \)-ideal~\(\mathcal J\)). A function \(f:X\to {\mathbb R}\) is said to have a \(\mathfrak L\)-continuous restriction property (\(\mathfrak L\)-C-RP) if there exists a set \(W\in \mathfrak L\) such that \(f|_W\) is continuous. A~pair \(({\mathcal A},{\mathcal J})\) is said to have a \(\mathfrak L\)-C-RP if every \(\mathcal A\)-measurable function has this property. Similarly, a \(\mathfrak L\)-pointwise discontinuous restriction property (\(\mathfrak L\)-PWD-RP) is defined. Six different classes of ``large'' sets are considered. A result is obtained which is a common generalization of three theorems: Blumberg's theorem, Baldwin's strengthening of Blumberg's theorem, and a related Brown-Prikry's result on Marczewski's (\(s\))-measurable functions.
