    Weighted estimates for operators with positive kernels, especially for the Riesz potential of the first order, are applied and weighted analogues of Trudinger's limiting embeddings of Sobolev spaces into Orlicz spaces [cf. \textit{N. S. Trudinger}, J. Math. Mech. 17, 473-483 (1967; Zbl 0163.36402)] are obtained. For example, the authors characterize the embeddings \[ W^{1,n}(B,v)\hookrightarrow L_{\Phi _k}(B,w_1,w_2), \] where \(B\) is the unit ball in \(\mathbb R^n\) centred in the origin, \(W_0^{1,n}(B,v)\) is the weighted Sobolev space with the norm \(\|f\|=(\int _B|\nabla f(x)|^nv(x) dx)^{1/n}\) and \(L_{\Phi _k}(B,w_1,w_2)\) is the weighted Orlicz space whose modular is \(\int _\Omega \Phi _k(w_1(x)f(x))w_2(x) dx\)) where \(\Phi _k(t)=\sum_{j=k}^\infty \frac {t^{{jn}/(n-1)}}{j!}\) and \(v(x)=|x|^\delta \), \(w_1(x)=|x|^\varepsilon \), \(w_2(x)=|x|^\eta \), or \(v(x)=\log ^\delta \frac e{|x|}\), \(w_1(x)=\log ^\varepsilon \frac e{|x|}\), \(w_2(x)=|x|^{-n} (\log \frac e{|x|})^{\eta -1}\).
