A polygonal function is a continuous function which is a union of finitely many line segments (a function is not distinguished from its graph). A set \(G\) open relative to \([a,b]\times \mathbb{R}\) is called an open strip if each vertical cross-section of \(G\) is an open interval. Two characterizations of the class \({\mathcal D}{\mathcal B}_1\) of Darboux Baire~1 functions defined on \([a,b]\) are given: (1) \(f\in {\mathcal D}{\mathcal B}_1\) iff \(f\) is the intersection of a sequence of open strips which is bilaterally dense in itself. (2) \(f\in {\mathcal D}{\mathcal B}_1\) iff there is a sequence \(\{p_n\}\) of polygonal functions having their vertices on~\(f\) and with the distances between consecutive vertices tending to zero such that \(\{p_n\}\) converges to~\(f\) pointwise. The class \({\mathcal B}_1\) of Baire~1 functions has similar characterizations: (\(1'\)) \(f\in {\mathcal B}_1\) iff \(f\) is the intersection of a sequence of open strips. (\(2'\)) \(f\in {\mathcal B}_1\) iff \(f\) is the pointwise limit of a sequence of polygonal functions whose vertices lie on~\(f\).
