In this paper, the authors introduce a bilinear spherical maximal function of product type in the spirit of the bilinear Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, including \[\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{full}}(f_1,f_2)(x):=\sup_{t>0}\mathcal{A}_tf_1\mathcal{A}_tf_2(x),\] and \[\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{lac}}(f_1,f_2)(x):=\sup_{j\in \mathbb{Z}}\mathcal{A}_{2^j}f_1\mathcal{A}_{2^j}f_2(x),\] where \(\mathcal{A}_rf(x)=\displaystyle\int_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}}f(x-ry)d\sigma_{n-1}(y)\), \(f: \mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow\mathbb{C}\) and \(0<r<\infty\). This operator is different from the bilinear spherical maximal function considered by \textit{D.-A. Geba} et al. [Math. Res. Lett. 20, No. 4, 675--694 (2013; Zbl 1287.42008)] and plays a key role in the theory of bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators. In the present paper, the authors deal with lacunary and full versions of this operator, and investigate weighted estimates with respect to genuine bilinear weights beyond the Banach range. Their results are implied by sharp sparse domination for both the operators, following ideas by \textit{M. T. Lacey} [J. Anal. Math. 139, No. 2, 613--635 (2019; Zbl 1433.42016)]. In addition, in the case of the lacunary maximal operator they also use interpolation of analytic families of operators to address the weighted boundedness for the whole range of tuples.
