\textit{S. Banach} [Théorie des opérations linéaires. PWN - Panstwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe, Warszawa (1932; Zbl 0005.20901)] asked the following question. Let \(X\) be a real or complex Banach space and \(\dim X\) denote the dimension of \(X\), which could be finite or infinite. Let \(2\leq n< \dim X\). Assume that all \(n\)-dimensional subspaces of \(X\) are isometrically isomorphic to each other. Is it true that \(X\) is a Hilbert space? The affirmative answer was given in the following cases. \begin{itemize} \item[1.] For \(n=2\) and \(X\) is real of any dimension, by \textit{H. Auerbach} et al. [Monatsh. Math. Phys. 42, 45--48 (1935; Zbl 0011.22208)]. \item[2.] For \(n\geq 2\), \(X\) is real, and \(\dim X=\infty\), by \textit{A. Dvoretzky} in [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 45, 223--226 (1959, Zbl 0088.31802); Proc. Int. Symp. linear Spaces, Jerusalem 1960, 123--160 (1961, Zbl 0119.31803)]. \item[3.] For even \(n\) and real or complex \(X\) of any dimension, by \textit{M. L. Gromov} in [Math. USSR, Izv. 1(1967) 1055--1064 (1969, Zbl 0176.10903)]. \item[4.] For odd \(n\) and real \(X\) of \(\dim X\geq n+2\) or complex \(X\) of \(\dim X\geq 2n\) by M. L. Gromov in the same paper. \end{itemize} In the current paper, the authors handle the case when \begin{itemize} \item[5.] \(n= 4k+1\) for some integer \(k\geq 1\) such that \(n\ne 133\) and \(X\) is real. \end{itemize} The proof combines two main ingredients: convex geometry and algebraic topology.
