This paper considers the question whether Stark-Heegner points (also called Darmon points) are rational. These points are certain local points on rational elliptic curves, conjectured to be defined over abelian extensions of real quadratic fields. This conjecture is known in the unramified case by a result of \textit{M. Bertolini} and \textit{H. Darmon} [Invent. Math. 168, No. 2, 371--431 (2007; Zbl 1129.11025)]. The authors extend this result to the case of ramified quadratic characters. The strategy of the proof is similar to the strategy used by Bertolini and Darmon. One difference is that the genus theory of non-maximal orders is more complicated than the usual genus theory. A second difference is that Bertolini and Darmon used a formula for the critical value of the \(L\)-function of specializations at arithmetic points of the Hida family passing through the modular form associated with the elliptic curve under consideration. This formula cannot be applied for ramified characters. The authors replace this formula by a \(L\)-value formula due to \textit{K. Martin} and \textit{D. Whitehouse} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2009, No. 1, 141--191 (2009; Zbl 1193.11046)].
