Let $\mathrm{Char}(X)$ be the moduli space of rank one $\mathbb{C}^*$-local systems on $X$, where $X$ is a connected CW-complex. The connected component of $\mathrm{Char}(X)$ containing the origin is denoted by $\mathrm{Char}^0(X)$. The cohomology support locus of $X$ is defined as $\Sigma(X):=\{L\in \mathrm{Char}(X)\mid H^i(X,L)\not= 0, \text{ for some } i\in \mathbb{N}\}$. \par The main result of this paper under review is that the Albanese map of a smooth projective surface $X$ is a submersion if $\Sigma(X')\cap \mathrm{Char}^0(X')$ consists of finitely many points for any finite abelian cover $X'$ of $X$. The author also gives a counter-example where the Albanese map is not a submersion and $\Sigma(X)\cap \mathrm{Char}^0(X)$ consists of finitely many points.
