The authors exhibit the instantaneous kinematics of the Euclidean, Galilean and pseudo-Euclidean plane. Their aim is to extend the classical Burmester theory to these planes using a unified approach in terms of `generalised complex numbers' \(a+ib\) with \(a,b\in{\mathbb R}\), \(i^2=-1,0,1\).
