Following their earlier work on numerical solution of equations of motion in nonlinear structural dynamics [Int. J. Struct. Stab. Dyn. 16, No. 9, Article ID 1550054, 26 p. (2016; Zbl 1359.65117)], the authors propose a new family of fully explicit time-integration methods. These have second-order accuracy for structures with or without damping. Using a diagonal mass matrix, the scheme remains fully explicit for structures with a non-diagonal damping matrix, and also when the internal force vector is a nonlinear function of velocity. The algorithm is self-starting and has an acceptable domain of stability. Numerical dissipation is used to suppress high-frequency spurious modes without affecting lower modes too much. The method is tested on several numerical examples coming from applications.
